Change is inevitable

It’s Thursday and I’m in my last two days of Massachusetts. This is what I’m doing.  I’ve confirmed my credentials for Texas and started the credentialing in Virginia. Virginia is a different group as the previous took 8 months and came back with telling me I would have to resubmit everything and starting over.  I’ll never deal with a group that does that again.  

So, I’m preparing my luggage and work bags.  I’m making sure copies of hotel bills are sent to the agency.  I’m making sure the final hourly bill is sent tomorrow after work.  I’m slowly packing and getting things ready to go.  I’ll be doing homework the next two nights so more time can be spent with family when I get home.   

I sent in my foreign corporation documents by fax and mail to Texas.  This took 4 minutes from searching the foreign corporation and Texas Secretary of State.   

Min the meantime I’ve been in contact with my accountant.  Talking about the change of location.   

I’ve tracked my route to Texas and planned the day of start in Texas so that all is ready and done for a good and quick start.  I have a badge and person that I’m meeting.  Hotel is set and ready to go.  Seems all I need to do is show up and get started. 

Otherwise we are working on the real estate.  We are offering currently on another potential rental, but we are only getting it if it’s at a deal level. The market is turning again to a buyer level in some environments like where I invest, YouTube for Francisco (growing and getting ready to monetize with ads), and getting Elizabeth set for schools and bank accounts (preparing to pay her annually for work). We are finally hunting for what may be our November vacation as we haven’t done a just Francisco and I vacation in a year or two ;).  The journey continues.   

 

Debt reduction as a locum.

I’ve been so fortunate that Francisco is an amazing parent!  Elizabeth has been at home with Francisco 90% of the time and we found a great babysitter through a friend.  Francisco has been knocking it out-of-the-Park with his YouTube channel/ website ConMuchoSabor.com.   

I looked at our debt 7 months ago and was so stressed that we were over $250k in debt not including our home.  I traded my truck for less than half the cost new SUV.  I went to work on locums and raised my rate while telling the place I needed any hours or call I could get.  I’ve been away from the family returning about every 4 weeks for a few days to a week.  We’ve still had time to visit family and a good “working” vacation.  I’m happy to report that our net worth is positive and debt is below 100K.  I’m going to a 2 week on 2 week off lifestyle with intermittent days on my weeks off that will allow us to keep decreasing our debt and allow me more time at home!  Our rental properties have picked up and are now paying for one new property per year and paying thier own expenses.   

I have approximately 3 more weeks away before getting started on my new locum contract!  I’m 12 weeks into my MBA carrying a 3.8 gpa and learning weekly.  I get to pour over financial reports and am doing better each week with my own reports as well!   

I continue to consider business opportunities and think that with time 1,2 or 3 could become something just like the rentals, YouTube or the websites.   

I just wanted to check in and thank you all for the positivity and thank our Locum professionals for keeping us in great standing so we can work, travel, & provide for our families!  We are so blessed!   

 

Work a little more

I seem to be one that says... “OK, I’ll just work a little more...”. I think it’s fine to say that once in a while for a one time expense but I have learned that saying that on long term expenses... stinks.  I honestly think I’ve thought about this and am much more attuned to.  It always seems there is something that happens just about the time that you make a little extra.  The dog has a vet visit, a crown is needed at the dentist, or a plumber is needed.  So, FI movement says pay off things rapidly and get 6 months or more in savings etc... I get it, I have to work on this and I know it’s do-able!  This is the first weeks of my 6 month run on this.  I get a paycheck next week and that already has it’s assignment.  But I’m assigning 3/4 of it and leaving 1/4 in the bank account for safety.  I know most emergencies can go on a credit card but I have a tendency to fear over-drawing an account ... it happened once 20 years ago!  Mom would tell me to get a checkbook register and write it all down.  Many people recommend writing down every single expense but I have yet to do this while on the road.  

This week I’m home and I want to go through and make sure I’m not stuck in subscriptions or reoccurring payments for apps or things I don’t need or worse just don’t use.   

I’m so exciting to be sitting in the airport and heading home for the week.  Many people tell me it’s about being home and taking the time to be present.  I totally agree and know that in the coming 6 months I’ll be going against that somewhat but those 6 months will make possible time to be home with the family more often and more in tune with all.  I’m feeling so excited to just be working toward a little freedom from payments ... not to mention the anticipation of the road of financial independence.  I hope all know I appreciate the comments... despite my reluctance to get rid of everything in a fire sale ;).  Have an amazing weekend and I’ll write more while at Mid-year Assembly! 

How can I help?

I think some are confused at this point.  I think some of you truly think I'm a recruiter for BlocHealth or National Anesthesia or some other company.  Some think that I'm some fancy dude that is just rolling in bank.  I hate to tell you that this is just so far from the truth.  

I'm a CRNA.  I've been a CRNA since December, 2009.  I have made my way through the locums world since 2011 and have been relatively happy.  I share my experiences and what I've learned along the way.  Yes, I've learned the hard way because honestly half the most out-spoken people just don't know everything and if they say they do... ask yourself if you know everything after being a XYZ of 10-20-30 years.... I'm betting the answer is no.  I prefer to state that I'm no lawyer or accountant but this is my experience, as it's the truth.  I'm not a financial expert or licensed as such so to give counsel... I can't do that.  I can tell you the things I have done or the people I have talked to.  

I can tell you what has and hasn't worked for me.  That's what this site is about, educating you so you don't make the same mistakes I have or collectively understanding where we are and where we go from here.  Giving you options and helping you to be able to figure out decent people to work with.  I can't tell you they are all perfect because part of the information is gathered from our peers to make this a more wholistic site.  I'm trying to give you all the information and not just one perspective.  

So, I'm not a recruiter because I don't call hospitals and get contracts for work.  I don't place CRNAs with hospitals or groups. I ask people to say that I referred them to all the agencies (when this site is instrumental in doing so) when they are going to go the agency route as the referral helps me make this site stronger for you and helps support the number of hours put into this resource. 

How many have looked at the other links at the bottom of the main page?  Anyone see the Store, Financial information that has Accountants and Financial advisers, Mortgage information, and maybe even the Where we go page that has the article by one of our own on RV'ing it across the country?  Take a moment to see all there is to offer.  Jobs come and go from the job board too.

I did get a request from an undergrad resource wanting to place links to anesthesia schools and feel that first one has to be done with school and should get their practice down before considering locums... so unfortunately, I declined that request.  I'm trying to keep this a clean but solid resource.  so... How can I help?

Education

I should have thought of that!  I should have known that but no one taught me! Whaaaa!

What are you doing to educate yourself?  What are you educating yourself on?  you notice it’s not about anyone else but you. It can be aslittle as a $20 audiobook.  You can do some college course. You can start calling your resources.  Call your accountant and ask questions as to what you can do to save on your taxes.  Call your financial person and ask what tax saving instruments can help you.  Have you taken care of your house first?   Are you continually educating yourself?  Listen to your growth and development books, podcast, and be on top of the news or what’s happening around our profession.  

Don’t tell me you never go to your state or national meetings and you can’t find any groups that are autonomous.  Don’t tell me you don’t understand business or negotiation  but never tried to learn.  Take on the task of learning... if you are broke, go to the library or sit at barnes and noble.  

Basically, it comes down to us continually improving our experience,business, communication, & finally staying current in our anesthesia practice. You don’t have to spend hundreds... Just start by taking in your resources and available information.  One point of view doesn’t mean you’re educated. So please, take in multiple points of view. Take on the importance of growing your person.

A little independence

It’s been a great start.  Do you ever get to the point of I’m going to a new place and you are super excited until a little before you actually go?   

After all the excitement dies, the nerves kick in. You wonder why are they having such difficulty? Why am i needed?  What are the surrounding politics and issues? Then it’s a myriad of conjecture that has you just about to say “nope, I’m good to stay home.” Yes, after multiple years i continue to get those pre jitters.  This time was more because it was very temporary and only a couple weeks work.  I need the work but I could just ride the debt wave just a little.  If you don’t know debt and your a Ramsey fan... i sooooo applaud you and I’m jealous.  

Anyways,  I’m here & so happy i didn’t just give in to staying home.  I’m at a GI center with just myself and another CRNA and it’s nice.  Just enough work to pay some bills. Yet, I get home in time to do things and relax.  We even went to find a YMCA to join while we are around the country! (Did you know they have babysitters for two hours a day?!) yes, that last comment makes me sound ... older.   

Today is another day that will be busy with deliveries and paperwork that is all being pushed to Francisco and my parents as I’ll be working!  It’s awesome to be able to say that I’m sorry and have to work. It’s very true as i had more available weeks and they just couldn’t use me.   

I’ve supplemented with work back in Massachusetts for two weeks!  That’ll be somewhat more of a challenge but still fun to see people i worked with in the past.  

I can’t wait to keep you updated on locum life.  this weekend I start making my presentation for Costa Rica! What an adventure the next 6 months will be!

Rough start

We left Philadelphia and things were looking good for the first 30 seconds.... 

We hit rush-hour traffic and were in a losing battle of time and weather.  I drove the blasted uhaul (26 foot beast) straight down as much as I could.  By 8:30pm it was snowing.  I was supposed to be in by 8:55 and I had so far to go.  Francisco became overwhelmed by the night and snow forcing he and Elizabeth to stop about 80 miles from Hampton Roads.  I forged on with the thought that i would not miss closing on the house or work.   

  I woke this morning to the information that the tunnel was closed and snow would last well into the day.  I made e-mails and texts in order to get the closing on the house accomplished.  Finally, i had an Uber to the notary’s home.  I officially closed and Uber said no cars were available.... i walked through the snow in order to get back to the hotel.  We are now the proud owners of a home loan.  

I found out i was cancelled for work on Friday.  Very happy for the 8 hour guaranteed day!   

This potentially gives me time to get things moved into the house!  Many things to be done!   

All those on the New England coast... be careful in snowmageddon.  

Motivation

I was listening to someone talk in the lounge saying they would never leave this area.  Her husband was offered an amazing opportunity and they said no as it wasn’t in the city.  Their kid was going to college and they begged to have them closer to home and now they think they might return to the same city.   

I guess this idea of staying in one place for life or not entertaining moving for career or home is foreign to me.  I’ve moved around and met new people my whole life.  Freinds of the long term capacity can be hard to come by.  However, within the military life of moving i found lifetime friends.  I know moving has allowed me to make friends around the country and understand different types of people, culture, and demographics. 

I tend to think anyone could do the locum life if they were so inclined but I’m learning that the more rigidly settled a person is the less likely for them to do locums.  Per diem in multiple hospitals in the area might be their perfect gig and while it may be 1099 it is unlikely to be billed as locum.  Others find a w-2 job that will allow them to work 2 full time jobs.  I see them race from call shift to call shift and i wonder how they do it when i know how it feels working 60-80 hour weeks and how lovely it can be at 40 hours.   

I think it all comes down to motivation.  Part of my motivation is to keep up in all areas of practice so I’m well rounded.  My goal is to be flexible, work a fair amount and over.  I want to be capable of going into any room and being comfortable.   I love new sights and allowing family to see all that surrounds us and our opportunities as we grow together.  Others, look for safe, secure, & what is known.  Others look for moving up the ladder of success in leadership, research or business as they grow and that is their motivation.   

Its fun to learn where people are in life.  Then it is nice to remember those people and in going to new places meet those who might also mesh well with others and who might build people up to their potential.   

So, dream big and bring others along the journey.  Find a passion and a motivation!   

Hello Hawaii

Here i am in Hawaii and I’m working on credentialing paperwork for the hospital and home loan paperwork for the mortgage.  It always seems i have to do some work on vacation.  I guess that’s part of being an adult these days.  

I try to be complete in getting things returned very quickly.  I told everyone that they should have paperwork done as I would be on vacation.  I figured I’d get some mortgage stuff as my brother is my broker and he is here... but credentialing for the hospital.  Canitant that I’ve done the agency/group/ and now hospital credential paperwork?  I know some hospitals third party credential... but why is it we can’t be centrally credentialed?   

I guess i can see how it would be negative because if you had any speed bump that would keep that group from credentialling and you’d be out of a job anywhere.  I just don’t see how we can get so many background checks?  Mine has been checked about every 6 months since i was 18. 

i hope i get in on that central credentialing agency! :). Granted it would likely be run by the nbcrna, aana, or nursys :) 

AANA Meeting

I wish I was able to meet everyone up in Seattle but this year is the new family time.  We have so many things we want to do each and every day it's just impossible to do all of them.  

I hope that all will make time for the vote and meetings as they are on-line this year!  

I am truly trying to make this site and blog helpful.  Help me make it standout as a site that others go to for solid information.  The only way to do this is to have people know that it exists and then to give feedback on how I can improve it.  

I have sent more than ten companies e-mails asking for tips, blogs, and information on how to help CRNAs in the tax, financial, mortgage, and insurance areas.  These areas are key to the financial health and well being of the independent/locum CRNA.  

I'm hopeful to get more and more information to you as I am able to get these very busy professionals to pass along their professional information.  I will continue to strive to give you excellent content and information as able.  

Please make time to go to the exhibits and tell locum agencies they can post their ads up so you can see what just applies to locums.  Also, give people both the Facebook and LocumCRNA.com site so that they can be involved and continue to learn.
